Solutions for a Safer World

  • Part 1: The role biosecurity plays in protecting borders from inbound risks
  • Part 2: Managing the threats from vector-borne diseases

Biosecurity

Biosecurity threats can result from attacks of invasive species, pests, and diseases, which cause damage to agricultural production, environment, community, and human health.  Increasing movements of goods and people, as well as changing climatic conditions, have accumulatively increased the risk of biosecurity incursions with the annual cost of invasive species to the Australian economy running in the billions of AUD.

Australia and New Zealand are recognized worldwide as being leaders in biosecurity systems, with Australia’s investment in biosecurity reflecting a 30 to one return.  Over many years the World Health Organisation has leaned towards the expertise from the Australian Department of Agriculture and New Zealand Ministries for Primary Industries when it comes to implementing global aircraft disinfection policies.

Thailand with its land borders represents a different set of challenges to Australia and New Zealand.

Vector-borne Diseases

Malaria is one of the most severe public health problems worldwide. It is a leading cause of death and disease in many developing countries, where young children and pregnant women are the groups most affected. According to the 2021 World Malaria Report, nearly half the world’s population lives in areas at risk of malaria transmission in 87 countries and territories.

Costs to individuals and their families include the purchase of drugs for treating malaria at home; expenses for travel to, and treatment at, dispensaries and clinics; lost days of work; absence from school; expenses for preventive measures; and expenses for burial in case of deaths.

Keeping safe from vector-borne diseases such as Dengue Fever, Zika, Malaria, Chikungunya, Leishmaniasis has resulted in advances in insect repellent technologies which provide long lasting protection and is safe to use on skin.  In addition, insecticides for clothes impregnation for optimum protection against mosquito bites, which can be applied on all types of fabrics and maintains its efficacy up to 5 washes, have been developed.

Our panel will discuss the importance of Thailand keeping pace with developments in biosecurity practiced across the world, global threats, and the role that Thailand can play in helping to protect Australia’s borders, as well as advances in mosquito protection technologies.
