ENABLING PROSPERITY
Moving Beyond the Middle-Income Trap
AustCham and the Australian Embassy Bangkok would like to invite you to join the upcoming conference, Enabling Prosperity: Moving Beyond the Middle-Income Trap. The conference will explore the notion of the middle-income trap, the implications it has on the Thai economy, and resolutions for both the public and private sector.
The “middle-income trap” describes a situation in which an undeveloped low-income country successfully lifted its economy to a middle-income country but lacks the necessary innovation, education, technological advancements and economic vigour to progress to a high-income country. In this trap, the country is unable to compete with both low-income economies that thrive on cheap labour and high-income economies that are highly productive and innovative.
In recent years, the concept has been widely applied to describe the Thai economy. If such applications are correct and Thailand is in fact stuck in the middle-income trap, the phenomenon will have significant repercussions on Thailand’s economic prosperity and business community.
The Enabling Prosperity: Moving Beyond the Middle-Income Trap conference will bring together leaders from government, business, academia and multilateral institutions to develop a comprehensive understanding of the concept of the middle-income trap and its implications on the Thai economy. The speakers will also explore public and private sector resolutions necessary to enable Thailand to move beyond the trap.
Following the conference, we will be hosting our Australian Alumni Annual Gala Dinner. We welcome you to join us in celebrating Australian Education at this special event. The dinner will feature speeches from H.E. James Wise, Australian Ambassador to Thailand, three successful Australian Alumni, an awards ceremony, and a professional performance from an acclaimed Alumni, Khun Navinda Pachimsawat Vadtanakovint (Lordfai).
